Responsible tourism: discover the underwater ecomuseum in Cannes!
Everyone knows the Lérins Islands… But did you know that their depths shelter a mysterious place… 100 meters off the coast of the Island Sainte-Marguerite, you will need to equip yourself with flippers, a mask and a snorkel to explore a well-kept secret: the first – and only – underwater ecomuseum in France. Embark on an unforgettable adventure during which you will be privileged to witness the delicate marriage between contemporary art and underwater life.
The story begins with a sad observation: fish, corals, algae and shells, once abundant, seem to have left the place… To restore and protect this remarkable landscape, British artist Jason de Caires Taylor, visionary and poet of the seabed, decides to bring this ecosystem back to life by creating six two metre high statues, with each weighing nearly 10 tonnes. Carved from ecological materials, neutral in PH and immersed between three and five meters deep, these works – like majestic silent guardians – are the new sanctuaries of marine fauna and flora which are gradually returning to populate these crystal clear waters.
In the morning, when the sunlight illuminates the sculptures with an almost supernatural shine and the conditions are optimal, immerse yourself in this fascinating universe lulled by the deep blue and vibrant colours of the new inhabitants of this Atlantis. Alone, with family or friends, prepare to experience a poetic journey. Let yourself be enchanted by the magic of the depths and the captivating beauty of this underwater ecomuseum. An adventure that will remind you that sometimes, it is beneath the surface that hides true enchantment.
